Background

Weis Markets was founded in 1912 and today employs approximately 23,000 associates. Currently operating 204 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia, Weis Markets has a long-standing history with the communities it serves and the local farmers and other producers who supply the grocery chain.

For nearly 110 years, Weis Markets and its associates have worked hard to offer their customers the best combination of value, quality and service.

Challenges

Weis Markets needed to upgrade from its legacy BMC Control-M scheduler, as it was no longer supported. The cost to upgrade was deemed excessive, given that the usability of the software was substandard when compared to alternative solutions. Weis Markets decided to transition to an automation solution better suited to its needs for improved cost efficiency, ease of use and improved performance.

Weis Markets sought a modern workload automation solution that could easily replace BMC’s Control-M, improving ease of use and functionality while enabling them to leverage their automation investment.

“We selected Stonebranch’s Universal Automation Center because it was everything we were looking for in a scheduling solution, and more. The transition team was extremely knowledgeable and responsive, and we could not have been happier with the migration.”

Solution

Following an extensive search, Weis Markets chose Stonebranch’s Universal Automation Center as their workload automation solution. The reason was simple: it offered everything they were looking for and more.

Stonebranch’s Universal Agents have minimized costs by enabling Weis Markets to run unlimited tasks. Furthermore, upgrading to new releases has become much simpler, allowing Weis Markets to stay focused on more high-value tasks.

“I would recommend Stonebranch to anyone who is looking for a scheduling tool. It truly is best-in-class.”

Results

Since implementing Universal Automation Center, Weis Markets has benefitted from virtually seamless upgrades, the ability to run unlimited tasks and, most importantly, vastly improved ease of use. This has kept costs down while significantly improving performance.

“Weis Markets needed to upgrade from its legacy Control-M scheduler, as it was no longer supported. Additionally, it was overly pricey, and difficult to learn and use,” says Mary McCreary, manager of Data Center Operations at Weis Markets.

“We selected Stonebranch’s Universal Automation Center because it was everything we were looking for in a scheduling solution, and more. The transition team was extremely knowledgeable and responsive, and we could not have been happier with the migration.”

Stonebranch provides a truly universal job scheduling or workload automation platform that can be used with any of the marketed scheduling products, other third-party vendor scheduling products and even homegrown solutions. Organizations can choose to either enhance their existing tools with Stonebranch or replace their legacy schedulers entirely, as Weis Markets chose to do.

Weis Markets now enjoys fewer job definitions. They have taken advantage of variables to build processes that are generic and can be run for each of their stores. Now when they bring a new store online, all they have to do is build new triggers for the store. They have succeeded in lowering their job definitions from 1,284 in BMC to 342 jobs in Universal Automation Center.

When asked if Weis Markets would recommend Stonebranch’s Universal Automation Center to other organizations looking to improve their automation, Ms. McCreary did not hesitate: “I would recommend Stonebranch to anyone who is looking for a scheduling tool. It truly is best-in-class.”
