BatchMan Tech Brief
A closer look at how BatchMan runs directly in the SAP ABAP stack to schedule, monitor, and control SAP and non-SAP background processes — with no added hardware or software.

BatchMan is a mature, SAP-certified job scheduling solution built directly into the ABAP stack of SAP ECC, SAP S/4HANA, and RISE with SAP. It extends standard SAP job management with the scheduling logic, monitoring, and alerting that large-scale automation requires, without introducing a separate platform to learn or maintain.
How BatchMan Is Architected
BatchMan can run centrally or locally across an SAP landscape. In a central setup, one SAP system, typically SAP Solution Manager, acts as the BatchMan master, storing all data in a single library. A BatchMan client installed on each managed SAP system communicates with the master over RFC connections. A second SAP system can be configured as a failover master, ready to take over job control at the push of a button if the primary system goes down. Non-SAP systems can be controlled directly from the master, with or without an agent.
For landscapes that need full isolation between systems, such as a dedicated HR instance, BatchMan also supports a decentralized architecture with multiple independent masters.
Load Distribution and Authorization
BatchMan reads SAP CCMS performance data to schedule processes around load peaks and keep system utilization balanced. Critical processes, like month-end closing or settlement runs, can be prioritized into their own queue so lower-priority jobs never delay them. Authorizations are modeled after SAP's own concept and grouped into predefined roles, so BatchMan slots into an existing SAP security model without a separate access system to maintain.
Core Building Blocks
- Jobs and Steps: A BatchMan job mirrors a standard SAP job but adds far more scheduling and start-criteria options. Steps, the smallest unit of processing, can run an ABAP program, external command, external program, or query.
- Process Types: Predefined types include Normal Job, BW Process (for InfoPackages and process chains), FI Process (for dunning and payment runs, with configs copyable across periods), Other Process (for SARA archiving and non-SAP integration), and an optional FDM Process for managed file transfer.
- Networks: Jobs and networks can be grouped into networks that model complex, cross-system dependencies using a graphical editor, with automatic validation for circular dependencies or missing objects.
Scheduling and Start Criteria
Scheduling runs on an SAP factory calendar and BatchMan shift schedule, with daily, weekly, or monthly rules and a special calendar for custom logic. Start criteria go well beyond a scheduled time: earliest/latest start windows, file dependencies across SAP and non-SAP systems, custom resources for bottleneck management, checkpoints and SAP events, TVARV-based conditions, and intraday time-periodic execution.
Alerts and Monitoring
Alerts can notify individuals or teams through email, pop-up, SAP Mail, SMS gateways, or platforms like ServiceNow, with escalation rules tied to job status or runtime. The BatchMan monitor gives a real-time, graphical view of every process across connected systems, with direct access to library objects and one-click actions like restarting a job or acknowledging a failure.
User Jobs and Failover
The user job concept intercepts jobs started through standard SAP tools, bringing them under BatchMan's load balancing and monitoring without changing how users work. The failover system lets a designated backup system take over master duties instantly during planned or unplanned downtime, with file-based backup as an added safeguard.
Controlling Non-SAP Processes
BatchMan's non-SAP module runs scripts and CLI programs and manages files across FTP, SFTP, SSH, Windows, and SMB/SAMBA systems, with or without a BatchMan agent. REST/HTTP support enables webhook integration, and processes can run synchronously or, with the optional FDM component, asynchronously, freeing the SAP work process while the job continues.
The BatchMan Toolbox
Roughly 40 built-in tools support SAP Basis and administration work: batch input processing with parallel execution, spool-to-PDF conversion and distribution, job scheduling and transaction locking, and calendar dependency management, plus advanced TVARV(C) rules for automatically updating dates, fiscal periods, and other system variables.
